Going out in the sun is something all of us hate. But are we aware of the fact that sun can be one of the sources for our healthy lifestyle? Talking about health, vitamins are one of the crucial requirements our body has. Do we get all these vitamins only from fruits, vegetables, milk etc.?
The answer to this question is NO. The main source of vitamin D is sunlight! The best time to expose yourself to sunlight is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for 20 minutes a day without sunscreen lotion. This process helps synthesize vitamin D under the skin.
Now a days it is seen that sunlight cannot be absorbed in cities because the air is polluted and UV rays don’t reach the skin. Tanned skin doesn’t effectively absorb vitamin D. Darker skinned people who live far from equator get less of sun exposure. This leads to vitamin D deficiency.
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and needed for absorption of calcium. It promotes cellular growth, stimulates insulin secretion and boosts immunity. It also reduces inflammation and manages the chronic pain. Other sources of Vitamin D are fatty fish, egg, yogurt, beef liver, milk, cheese etc. It is not present in vegetarian foods.
Deficiency of it leads to rickets in kids and osteoporosis, weakness, easy fractures, severe bone pain in adults. Low Vitamin D levels are also linked to lifestyle diseases like diabetes and obesity. Renal patients are also prone to face deficiency in Vitamin D as kidney fails to function.
Proper intake of Vitamin D is essential for our health. Vitamin D can lift up our mood and energize us. It reduces depression levels too.
